Monthly Summary November

A Wet Month ~ a 25 year record Rainfall

Maleny Weather

November 2008

During the month we had a series of north-west cloudbands passing over the Ranges to boost the month’s rainfall to a 25 year record of 282.8 mm. This represents 149 mm over the 115 year average. It was a cool month with a mean temperature two degrees below average. We are on track for an above average annual rainfall. Evapotranspiration for the month was slightly down on the norm with 94 mm; whereas Bright Sunshine with 199 hours showed an increase on previous years.

Four thunderstorms were recorded, one with some spectacular lightning. The Range caught the tail end of a SEQ Severe Super-cell Thunderstorm that affected Brisbane suburbs and struck The Gap with a destructive ‘microburst’. Up to 4000 homes were damaged in the storm, with 300 homes significantly damaged and 30 homes estimated to be unliveable.

Sultry conditions prevailed over the past week as a frontal system merged with an inland trough to bring a moist air flow and 90 per cent humidity to the Ranges. Although the daily maximum temperature on most days was recording mid-twenty degrees the heat stress factor – the temperature we feel – was registering 33 degrees!

OUTLOOK. Unsettled ~ possible afternoon or evening storms.
