July Weather 2008

Above average rainfall helps to increase dam water levels

July Weather

July Weather.  July was an extremely wet month with 16 rain days giving a total of 204 mm to help fill some near empty dams. We were very fortunate to get rain at this time as the previous maximum rainfall was in July nine years ago in 1999.

We have had two cold spells during the month with the lowest overnight temperature falling to 3.5ºC. On Wednesday 23rd the maximum temperature struggled to reach 11 degrees, the coldest July day at Maleny on record.

The maximum wind gust was 50 km/h at 2.00am on the 21st. On several days the Hinterland was shrouded in fog, sometimes thick enough to reduce visibility down to 500 metres.

August Weather Prospects. There is a possibility rainfall on the Ranges will be below the 113 year average of 83 mm.  Completely ‘dry’ August months without any precipitation were recorded in 1926, 1927, 1936, 1991 and 2000. The maximum rainfall on record is 246 mm in 1953. In 1994, a 36 day drought was broken on the 18th in a month when a severe dust storm enveloped the Ranges. The mean temperature for August is 14ºC, with a likelihood of 15 days when the minimum temperatures falls below 10ºC.
