June Weather

The wild wet and windy weather at the beginning of the month resulted in mopping-up operations as the East Coast Low moved south and away from our coast. With the thinning out of low cloud there was a five degree drop in temperatures. However, it was not long before high cirrus started moving in from the southwest; a harbinger of a northwest cloudband and rain to the Ranges for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend break.

The dominant weather feature for the month was early morning fog; created by saturation of the ground and a temperature inversion that kept the bank of fog down to ground level The Weather Bureau reported the southeast has had the foggiest June for 40 years. On Friday 20th it was an unusual sight to see early morning International jets stacked up over the Blackall range waiting for landing instructions from Brisbane Airport control tower.  Later the same day, thunder clouds rolled in and we had a thunderstorm at 3.30pm when some large raindrops put 16 mm of rain into the gauge at the rate of 120 mm per hour.

The Mean Temperature was 14.6 degrees and is the warmest June since 1998, when the Mean Temperature was 15 degrees.

The month’s rainfall was the highest June rainfall since 1999, when 231 mm was recorded at Maleny. The 115-year average for the month is 107 mm.

Rainfall, so far this year, is 1507 mm, representing 146 mm above average for the first six month period.

OUTLOOK. The high will move slowly eastwards and reach the Tasman Sea late in the weekend. S/SE winds will freshen. and showers are likely to develop from Saturday onwards in the moist maritime on-shore winds.
